Crochet Cacti

Crochet Cacti

Cacti and succulents are one of the biggest trends recently and after owning cacti and succulents myself I know they are a great little addition for the home, for some people owning plants is a challenge so this is where crocheted cacti are perfect.

Materials

Mini Pots – 6cm tall 5cm diameter.
Brown Yarn for Soil
Green Yarn for the Cacti
Crochet hook size recommended for the yarn.
I used Style Craft DK yarn and a 3.25mm hook.

For a list of techniques and how to pictures please see the end of the post.

Patterns
Soil

I used the same soil pattern for each of my pots, and they fit quite snug in the pot. if your pots are bigger or smaller you may need to adjust the increasing before Rnd 4 to do this make sure to increase the amount of DC by 1 before the DC increase e.g. Rnd 3 (DC 1, DC 2 into next stitch ) x 6, Rnd 4 (DC 2, DC 2 into next stitch ) x 6 Rnd 5 (DC 3, DC 2 into next stitch ) x 6. You may need to increase the number of increases before decreasing the top, this can be done by placing a row of DC between a row of increases e.g. Rnd 8 (DC 5 DC 2 into next stitch) x 4, Rnd 9 DC, Rnd 10 (DC 6 DC 2 into next stitch) x 4, Rnd 11 DC, Rnd 12 (DC 7 DC 2 into next stitch) x 4. stop after each row and place the soil in the pot to make sure it fits your pot.

Chain 21,
Row 1 miss first stitch and HTC into each chain, chain one and turn. (20)
Row 2 HTC into the back loop, chain on stitch and turn.
Repeat row 2 until you have completed 13 rows.

As you have turned each row you will not have a right or wrong side, choose your neatest looking side as the right one.
Fold RS to RS, sew along the seam.
Weave the yarn through the loops of the opening making sure to go through them all and pull tight, this should close the opening. Please see the bottom of this post for instructions on sewing up.
Turn the cactus inside out and fill.
pass the needle and yarn to the bottom of the cactus and weave the yarn through the loops of the opening but this time do not close fully, stitch the cactus to the soil.

Row 1 miss first stitch and HTC into each chain, chain one and turn. (20)
Row 2 HTC 20, chain on stitch and turn.
Repeat row 2 until you have completed 14 rows.

as you have turned each row you will not have a right or wrong side, choose your neatest looking side as the right one.
Fold RS to RS, sew Along the seam, create a cross shape by pinching the two edges and pushing into the center.
sew the opening closed in the cross shape and turn inside out, repeat the sewing on the last opening and sew onto the soil.

Round Cactus

With the round cactus, you can make this as tall and wide as you like.

I recommend chaining at least 15 for a small cactus, to make it rounded you need to crochet more rows till it is wider than it is tall. stuff and sew as per the ribbed cactus

Techniques used

DC – Double Crochet/ US Single Crochet
HTC – Half Treble Crochet/ US Half Double Crochet
HTC Rib

When doing HTC Rib ensure you go into the back stitch highlighted in the picture.

When sewing up the ribbed cactus and the flat round cactus weave the needle and yarn through all the stitch around the opening and pull tight to close the opening.
